This happened a few years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida...a 13-year-old home from the last day of school decided to go for a swim. He ran through the house, shedding clothes and shoes, grabbed his suit, and shot out the back door and dived in swimming in the cool, refreshing water. As he swam away from shore...an alligator was swimming toward shore.
His dad, working in the yard saw the two getting closer and closer. He ran to the water, shouting to his son as loud as he could to warn him. He heard the warning and made a quick turn back to shore! Too late! Just as he reached the dock...his dad reached for him and the gator got him. The dad grabbed his son just as the gator bit down on his legs...an incredible tug-of-war took place. The gator was stronger than the dad...but the dad was more passionate! A neighbor heard the screams, raced to his house, got a gun and returned to shoot the reptile.
Remarkably, after weeks in the hospital, the teen survived! His legs were scarred by the vicious attack. Stitches were everywhere and skin grafts and rehab took place. And his arms were also scarred with deep scratches where his dad's fingernails had dug into his flesh in the effort to hang on to the son he loved.
A newspaper reporter interviewed the boy after the trauma and asked if he could see the scars. The teen lifted his pants legs and then with obvious pride said, "But look at my arms. I have these because my dad wouldn't let go!"
We might have scars from a painful past...but there also might be some wounds because God our loving Heavenly Father has not let go because He loves YOU!
"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world though Him" (John 3:17).
