Potholes in the Road

Jonas Salk developed a vaccine for polio.

However, he tried two hundred unsuccessful ones, until he found the one that finally worked. Somebody asked him, “How did it feel to fail two hundred times.”

Salk replied, “I never failed two hundred times in my life. I was taught not to use the word ‘failure.’ I just discovered two hundred ways how not to vaccinate for polio.”

Proverbs 24:16 states, “For a righteous man may fall seven times, and rise again.”

“Seven” means often, expressing plurality. A righteous man is hard to keep down. He has an inner resolve that others do not possess. His faith in God has made him strong. He moves on, learning from each mistake, and becomes a better person.

Winston Churchill was once asked what it was that prepared him to boldly warn of Hitler, while other leaders were trying appeasement in the mid-1930’s.

By doing this, he risked political suicide. However, he eventually led Great Britain against Nazi Germany.

He answered that it was the time when he had to repeat a grade in elementary school.

“You mean you failed in grade school?” he was asked.

“I never failed anything in my life. I was given a second opportunity to get it right!”

“Stop worrying about the potholes in the road, and celebrate the journey!”
