Today's Scripture: Proverbs 16:19-20
Central Thought: God's way of humility and obedience will always make me rich in the things that truly matter.
For years now, my husband and I have battled with financial disasters due to lay-offs and illness. One by one, we gave up things dear to us just to make ends meet. Each time we thought we were out of the crisis, another trial came barreling down on us.
What is going on here? We asked ourselves hard questions. We agonized over what we may have done wrong. As a couple we tried hard to be good stewards of God's money and continued to tithe even when things were very bleak. From a worldly point of view, we probably looked like losers. That's pretty humiliating, no matter how you look at it.
During these difficult years, God has taught us wonderful lessons. We hate the trials but love what He has done in our lives through them. As we turned to Him with all our financial poverty, He gave us riches that will never fade. We have been blessed by wonderful friends, a strong marriage that has survived enormous stress, and most blessed of all—a deep, abiding peace in His provision. Money comes and goes. Homes come and go. Careers come and go. Pride is brought low, and only Jesus remains. In Him, we have all the riches we will ever need.
Devotional Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You that You have made us rich by humbling us. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
