January 2 - Godly Instruction Leads to Good Decisions

Devotional Scripture: Proverbs 1:7-9

Central Thought: The value of godly instruction may be seen in the good decisions it produces.

The writer of Proverbs 1:7-9 offers time-tested advice. The wisdom and knowledge found in this advice are rooted in a deep and profound respect for the Lord, His Word, and all His ways. God desires that this wisdom and knowledge be passed on from generation to generation through diligent instruction and life example. God's plan is for parents to teach and live out His precepts before their children, and for children to internalize this instruction and modeling. Those who do so will experience honor and glory (Proverbs 1:9).

Godly instruction is important to one's conscience and everyday decision-making. Its value becomes evident when individuals are called on to make decisions at a moment's notice, as one young high school student found out after his baseball team suffered elimination from a hard-fought tournament.

As the dejected team gathered for the post-game huddle, one player secretly assured the others he had plans to help them 'get over their loss.” The young man who had been taught God's precepts understood that the plan to 'get over their loss” was morally wrong. He was confronted with a life decision that needed immediate action. On the way to the family car, the young man explained to his parents why he wanted to stay with them that night instead of with his teammates. His parents admired and praised their son's decision. A father's advice and a mother's teaching (Proverbs 1:8) led to a son's good decision.

The value of godly instruction paid off for this family. It can do the same for yours.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help us as parents to diligently teach and live your precepts before our children so they will be equipped to make right decisions when the time comes.
