June 6 - Building A Business On Ice Water

Building A Business On Ice Water

In 1936 North America was experiencing some the hottest temperatures ever recorded. For example...some parts of South Dakota during July had temps as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit and no air-conditioning, especially in cars! And there was a couple, Dorothy and Ted who were struggling to establish a drug store in Wall, South Dakota, right near the Badlands. Customers were few and far between.

Dorothy Hustead was attempting to take a nap on one of those hot July days...it was no use. She felt the heat and she was disturbed by the car rumbling by on the highway in front of their small store. She knew the drivers and passengers were feeling the same kind of heat with no relief in sight. She had one of those bright ideas!

She told her husband, Ted. They made up some signs for the highway promising free ice water! The customers came pouring it...and soon wanted more than the free ice water. Ted hit the road and posted signs farther and farther from Wall, South Dakota. The business, today is still growing. You may have seen their signs as far away as Japan and Europe and more. The little drugstore with the free ice water has not changed...in fact, today, if you go through Wall, you can still get free ice water! This little store has grown into a 500 seat restaurant and all kinds of mall stores. Interesting.

So what's the big deal? Today's world is full of people in a hurry to get a drink of cool water. Who is going to offer them a drink of the water of life? How about you and me who may have already drunk of this water which brings eternal life?!

"Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:1).
