Crown of Creation

My daughter loved to play dress up. She could pretend for hours that she was anyone or anything she wanted to be. She loved dressing up as a princess. She would walk around with her crown on her head and her sweeping train (made of a bed sheet), along with a construction-paper scepter, and she was ready to rule her kingdom. With a flick of her hand, her teddy bears would scurry to do her bidding. She had absolute power, and she got to wear a crown! At the sensitive age of ten, she no longer plays dress up, but she still loves to imagine that she is the princess (as do most women of any age)!

Although few of us will ever be princesses, the Bible states that we are royalty. In Genesis 2:22, our Heavenly Father created woman to be a helpmate for Adam. She was created last--not because God forgot about her or because she was not special enough; God created Eve to be the "crown" of His creation.

Just as a queen's crown is a symbol of her authority, a woman is the same representation of her husband's, and ultimately God's, authority. First Corinthians 11:7 states, "The woman is the glory of man." Glory is defined as "a great honor and admiration." Because we are women, we are the glory of our husbands! We have achieved great honor, not because of what we have done, but rather because we were made that way.

I have always been a bit envious of the Proverbs 31 woman. I wish I could do half the things she does. I cannot sew, I have never made a covering for my bed, nor have I ever planted a vineyard. Even if I never achieve those things, I know that my household and my husband will be looked upon with favor. Verse 23 says, "Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land." Ever wonder how that applies to a "noble woman"? I had always seen that verse as an interruption of who the "noble woman" is. Here she is, being busy and taking care of her family, and we see an interruption with her husband sitting at the city gate. But, if we look at the surrounding verses we can see that it is because of her love, her hard work and her effort for her family that he is able to sit with pride among the elders at the city gate. She is his "crown." She is the "proof," if you will, that he is the provider and the authority that he is supposed to be.

As women we are to walk beside our husbands, under their authority, and stand behind their leadership. All that we do is for their glory, but ultimately it is for the glory of our Heavenly Father. First Corinthians 11:12 states, "For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God." Everything, including women and our cherished place in the heavenly realm, comes from God.

One day, when we reach paradise, I know that I will come before my Maker and lay down at His feet the crowns that I have been rewarded for this life. I am so glad to know that daily my husband lays the "crown" he was given on earth at the Maker's feet. There is no place I would rather be.
