Genesis 39-40 Bible Study

After Joseph was sold by his brothers to a caravan of Ishmaelites and carried off to Egypt, Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials, bought him. 'The Lord was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master” (39:3). Joseph did so well that Potiphar placed him in charge of his entire household and everything Potiphar owned.

Joseph was very handsome, and after a while Potiphar's wife took notice of him. She tried to encourage Joseph to come to bed with her, but he refused. One day she sent all the other servants out of the house and summoned Joseph. She grabbed his cloak and said, 'Come to bed with me!” But Joseph refused and ran out of the house, leaving his cloak behind. When Potiphar returned home his wife told him that Joseph had tried to sleep with her. Potiphar became very angry and placed Joseph in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined.

While Joseph was in prison the Lord showed him favor, and the warden of the prison was kind to him. He put Joseph in charge of all those in the prison and made him responsible for all that was done there.

Chapter 40 tells us the story of the cupbearer and the baker. Somehow they had offended their master, the king, and were thrown into prison with Joseph. One night after they had been in prison for a while, the baker and the cupbearer each had a dream. The next morning they were very sad because they did not know what the dreams meant, and they told Joseph they could not understand their dreams. Joseph told them that interpretations belong to God, and he asked the men to tell him their dreams.

The cupbearer went first and told Joseph his dream (vv. 9-11). Joseph told him what the dream meant (vv. 12-13). Then he asked the cupbearer to remember him when he got out of prison, to mention him to Pharaoh so Joseph might get out also. Next, the baker told Joseph his dream (vv. 16-17). Then Joseph told the baker that within three days he would be hanged.

After the three days had passed, all that Joseph had told the two men came true, but the cupbearer did not remember Joseph to Pharaoh.
