It's an old story with lots of variations...but here goes this version: Two teen-agers were out hiking on top of the Grand Mesa mountain in Western Colorado when they happened upon a mama bear with a set of twin cubs. The hikers were not aware of their presence...so hiked and talked but without being aware...they walked between the cubs and their mama.
She reared to her full height and roared in protection of her little ones and dropped to her four feet and began a charge. There is no fury like a mama bear protecting her cubs! The situation was serious! The teens turned and began running. One of the stopped...pulled his heavy hiking boots off and jammed on his running shoes!
His friend yelled at him, "Come on man!! WE got to get out of here! Why are you changing your shoes? We can't outrun this bear, anyway!"
Jumping back to his feet and lunging into a full run, the first guy yelled, "I don't have to outrun the bear...I only have to run faster than you!"
Talk about a great friend?! Yah...well, let's talk about friendship a bit. What's the ultimate test of friendship? Think! Jesus has given us the answer. Jesus tells us in the Bible that this ultimate test of friendship is when a friend will be willing to give up his life for a friend. Wow. He did and he showed us the way. He went to the cross and died for all of us calling us His friends!
So, what about you? Are you a fair-weather friend, one who is only a friend until the going got tough, until there is risk involved? What kind of a friend are you?
"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:12-13).
