Love affairs are not unusual for teens, today. Felipe Garza, Jr. age 15, "dated" Donna Ashlock who was 14 until she cooled it off by dating other boys after. However, Felipe would not let his feelings for her cool off.
One day Donna doubled over in pain. Doctors soon discovered she was dying of a degenerative heart disease and desperately needed a heart transplant. Felipe heard about Donna's condition and told his mother, "I'm going to die and I'm going to give my heart to Donna." 15-year-old boys can say some irrational things. He appeared in excellent health at this point.
Three weeks later, Felipe woke up and complained of a pain on the left side of his head. He began losing his breath and couldn't walk. He was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered a blood vessel in his brain had burst and left him brain dead. Felipe's sudden death mystified his doctors! While he remained on a respirator, his parents decided to allow his heart to removed for Donna and his kidneys, eyes and other organs were also donated to others in physical hurt.
Donna received Felipe's heart! After the transplant, Donna's father explained Felipe had been sick for three months..."his family donated his kidneys and eyes." There was a pause, then she replied, "And I have his heart."
"Yes," Her expression changed, she asked her dad who knew. He said, "Everybody." She teared up and nothing more was said.
Some days later, a funeral procession seemed to roll on forever through the fields and orchards of Patterson, California. It could have been for royalty...but it was for Felipe, his only claim to fame was his love and his heart.
Think with me a moment...what life application comes to mind for YOU?
