The Puffer Fish

Robert Strand

The puffer fish is one of the most poisonous creatures in the sea. Its poison is 275 times more deadly than cyanide. In spite of its poisonous nature...many Japanese diners consider the raw flesh of the "fugu," a type of puffer fish, as the ultimate delicacy.

pufferfishThese Japanese gourmets will pay well over $300 per plate for a fugu meal. For the most discriminating diners, nothing can match the flavor of its liver. But it's also the liver where the poison can be most concentrated. Even though it is illegal to serve the puffer fish, chefs are sometimes begged, bribed, or bullied into serving this poisonous delicacy.

IF the fish is very carefully prepared, then it is safe. BUT, there are a couple of problems with this method: There is NO way to tell if the fish has been properly prepared and THE only way to tell if there is still poison in the fish is to eat it. If the diner lives, then the fish is okay...if the diner dies, then the fish is poisonous!

The death is grim. The toxin acts on the nervous system, first a tingling in the lips and mouth...then paralysis. You can still think clearly...but you are paralyzed and death may occur instantly or it may take six hours. THERE IS NO KNOWN ANTIDOTE!

WHY would anyone want to each such food? Why feast on things in this world that are just as deadly and will eventually kill you? There is both spiritual poison and spiritual life-giving food available to all of us. Life or death depends on which diet we choose! The best diet is recommended by the writer of Psalms, "Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who trust in Him!" When you eat this good food, there will be no death...but eternal life and abundance!

"Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On Him, God the Father has placed His seal of approval" (John 6:27).
