Adapting To Change

Robert Strand

Your generation has no recollection of World War II because it happened in the past. However, you may have studied it and some of the effects of this war to end all wars. Among the nations almost totally destroyed was Japan. Following the war, industry in Japan was devastated. The Japanese government hired Dr. Edward Deming, who was a capitalist, to help them rebuild their industrial infrastructure.

carriageoutsidehouseDr. Deming's main theme was simply that they must "make it better and it will cost you less in the long run. It will increase demand for your products and cost you less to repair them if they malfunctioned."

Deming then presented his clients with a list of objectives that began with the simple notion that for a business to be successful, that business needed to know what business it was really in. He explained to them that "buggy whip" manufacturers were no longer in business because they thought they were in the buggy whip business. But they were actually in the business of "vehicle acceleration."

IF THEY would have understood that their real business was vehicle acceleration, they may have been able to adjust with a changing market. As modes of transportation changed, they could have adapted. THEY NEEDED TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE.

NOW...when you go out into the business world when you finish school, if you are to make real, lasting changes...ALWAYS KEEP THE BIG PICTURE IN MIND!

It's the same way in the spiritual world...what is the big picture? To prepare yourself to eventually make heaven your eternal home! AND to help as many other people also get to heaven with you!

"Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man" (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
