A Carrot, An Egg and a Cup of Coffee

Robert Strand

eggsboilingOlga, 18-years-old complained to her mother about how things were so hard for her. She whined and complained about school and her part time job and her teachers and her boss and that she never had enough money and all the problems of her life.

This was taking place in the kitchen and as Olga talked, her mother filled 3 pots with water and placed them on burners. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first one she put carrots, in the second she put eggs and the last she put in ground coffee. She let them boil and didn't say a word as Olga continued to complain

About 20 minutes later she turned off the burners...she fished out the carrots, took out the eggs and poured a cup of coffee. Turning to Olga she asked, "What do you see?"

Olga replied, "Carrots, eggs and coffee."

Then her mother asked her to feel the carrots, next break and peel the hardboiled eggs and take a taste of coffee. "Okay...mother, what now?"

Her mother explained that each of these three had all faced the same problem: hot boiling water. "But notice," she went on, "each had a different reaction. The carrots went in strong, hard and unbending. The egg had been frail in the outer shell but the insides had become hard. The coffee was different...after they had been in the water, they changed the water into something else." She paused, "NOW, Olga, which one of these are you?

How Will You Respond?
