This story is about a 73-year-old farmer who lived in Iowa near the town of Bettendorf. He was single and lived alone but still farmed his very large farm. In an accident, on Sunday afternoon, his tractor tipped over and pinned him beneath it for four days and four nights. Nobody had seen the accident. Four days without food or water and laying in pain. Concerned friends went to check on him and rescued him. He was taken to the local hospital for treatment...he lived, he survived...but he lost his leg, below the knee.
Several newspapers picked up the story expressing amazement that a 73-year-old farmer could survive such a ordeal. Even more unique is the reason why his friends went looking for him. One neighbor said it best, "He never missed Wednesday night prayer meeting at church. Last night he missed so we knew something was wrong." Simply missing one church service saved his life.
Not missing a single church service just might be the thing that will save your life, too! Why bother with church?
It's quite simple, but also compelling. People need people! Teens need teens! God's people need God's people in order to know God in a better relationship. God's life in Christ is a corporate kind of an affair. All God's promises were made to God's people in the plural! Just show me the story of a Bible Christian who was an isolated, alone, without people kind of Christian. The Bible doesn't teach about becoming isolated...it teaches about all of us about becoming together in a group, a special body called THE CHURCH! By the way have you missed church, lately?
"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another...and all the more as you see the Day approaching" (Hebrews 10:24-25).
