The Real Presidential Veto

Robert Strand

livingroomchairsandtableThe former first lady of the United States, Laura Bush, recalls one overnight visit with her husband, George W. Bush, in the home of his parents, the former President and Mrs. Barbara Bush. "George woke up at about 6:00 am, as was his usual practice and went downstairs to get a cup of coffee," Mrs. Bush.

"Then he sat down on the living room sofa, with his parents and put his feet up on the coffee table," according to Laura.

And all of a sudden, Barbara Bush yelled, "Put your feet down!"

George's dad then replied, "For goodness sake, Barbara, he's the President of the United States."

And Barbara said, "I don't care. I don't want his feet on my coffee table!"

The President promptly did as he was told as Mrs. Barbara Bush observed, "Even Presidents have to listen to their mamas!" (John McCaslin, The Washington Times, from "Inside the Beltway," 11/12/2003)

Listen and obey your mamaI think all of us can probably relate. Would you like to live a long and exciting life? The Bible tells us that one key to living a long time is to obey your mother...and father, so that your days may be long on this earth. This is such an important life key that the Bible explains it's a command with a special promise. This promise, apparently has no time limits...therefore whether we are young or old...just ordinary or a world leader...the Bible, God the Creator, and a former Presidential First Lady all give the same important advice: LISTEN AND OBEY YOUR MAMA!

"Honor your father and your MOTHER, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God has given you" (Deuteronomy 5:16).
