Corrie ten Boom often told the story of how she expressed her anxieties to her father when she was a child.
“Daddy, I wish I had the faith to face tragedies with a cheerful spirit.” Her father answered her: “Corrie, the Lord will give you the faith when you need it! Just keep trusting Him.” Then, he went on to explain, “Corrie, when I send you to the store, I don’t give you the money to carry in your pockets while you are playing. I give you the money when you are ready to go to the market.”
Corrie learned her lesson well. Years later, the Nazis arrested her, and placed her in a concentration camp. She found that she had unbelievable faith to face the worst possible human tragedies without collapsing internally.
Psalm 121:5 promises, “The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.”
“The Lord is your keeper” means that He is your Defender, keeping you from danger, and Preserver, keeping you from falling.
“The Lord is your shade at your right hand” means, “He is always present with you,” or as the Jewish Arab renders it, “Nigher than thy shadow at, or from thy right hand.”
John Bunyan, in Pilgrim’s Progress, states that the hen has four different calls for her chicks:
- There is the common call.
- There is a special call.
- There is a brooding call.
- There is a warning call.
In like manner, the voice of God speaks to His people, and He has a call for every purpose.
He instructs, commissions, guides, and warns.
“No problem is too big for God’s power; no person too small for God’s love.”
