November 10 - Better Wise Than Sorry

By Crystal J. Ortmann

Today's Scripture: Proverbs 27:12

Central Thought: It is wise to think things over before making a big decision.

Life is filled with temptations and they come from every direction. After watching a few commercials for delicious food, I find myself standing in front of the refrigerator. Material goods are constantly advertised and I feel outdated and out-of-touch; clothing, furniture, automobiles, cell phones, computers, and things I really don't need can keep me constantly dissatisfied. I try now to make it a point to stop and ask myself: Do I really need this? If it's a very big decision, I sleep on it first.

Years ago, a little girl sat on the curb and next to her was a box of fluffy, adorable puppies. I fell in love at first sight. Without thinking it through, I took one of the puppies home with me. My young son and I were ecstatic; that is, until we got home. The puppy wasn't housetrained, she cried in the night, and she made a huge mess. We had no yard and I had no time to walk her daily. Money for a license, shots, or neutering was not in my budget. In short, it was a nightmare. Before long, we had to give the pup away to someone who could care for her properly. I still regret the hurt I did to us all by not thinking that decision through.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, please help me to think before I do, say, or buy.
