Today's Scripture: Jeremiah 23:23-24
Central Thought: The Lord is ever-present, ready to deliver us from any situation.
When tornadoes, earthquakes, or tsunamis bring destruction, unbelievers often respond with an accusing cry, 'Where was God?” When faced with great evil in the world, the plaint is heard: 'Where is your God now?”
Have you ever asked, 'Where is God?” Perhaps it was in a moment of great sorrow or tragedy that you wondered, 'Where is God in all of this?” Have you prayed and felt your prayers went no higher than the ceiling. With longing you whispered, 'Where is God?”
When we fail God and fall into temptation, our sin separates us from His love. We wonder where God is because, like Adam, we want to hide from Him. Whether as an accusation or from a longing heart, humankind looks into the heavens and wonders, 'Where is God?” In Jeremiah 23:23-24, God responds with three questions of His own. 'Am I a God at hand and not a God afar off?” 'Can anyone hide from me?” 'Do I not fill heaven and earth?”
God declares His omnipresence; He is ever-present. He is Almighty; His power is felt in heaven and on earth. He is omniscient; not even our thoughts can be hidden from Him. There is irony in our trying to hide from an all-knowing, all-seeing, ever-present Creator. The Lord longs to be our shelter and our refuge. 'You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance” (Psalm 32:7 NIV).
'Where am I?” you ask. The Lord declares, 'I'm right here; I'm not far away.” Whatever your need today, look to the Lord. He is our ever-present help in time of need.
Devotional Prayer: Father, like the Psalmist, I run to You, not from You. You are my Savior and my deliver. All of my trust is in You.
