Today's Scripture: Ephesians 6:10–18
Central Thought: God has provided all of the equipment we need to wage war against Satan.
Roman legions were the most feared soldiers of the ancient world. At the height of the Roman Empire, these well-trained and disciplined units fought fiercely and conquered many lands. Their armor also helped to protect them in battle, and their weapons helped to ensure that they would prevail.
Paul compares the armor of God with the Roman armor in today's reading. A key to understanding his analogy is that the believer's warfare is not against other people—it is against Satan and his forces of evil. Understanding that this is spiritual warfare helps us to understand that we need spiritual protection and weapons. Each piece of armor represents an important principal to Christian life. God's truth, His righteousness, the Gospel of Peace, faith, salvation, and the Holy Spirit separate Christianity from any man-made religion.
God wants us to be ready for the spiritual battles we will face in life. Satan is not pleased that we have chosen to follow Jesus. He eagerly awaits any opportunity to destroy our faith and ruin our relationship with God. We need to make sure every piece of God's armor is in place in our lives.
Devotional Prayer: Thank You for the armor of God that will help me be an effective soldier in Your Kingdom
