September 6 - Making Pleasing Sacrifices to God

By Terra Hangen

Today's Scripture: Psalm 50:1–23

Central Thought: God rejects sacrifices made by wicked people and accepts thanksgivings from godly people.

Psalm 50 is replete with dire warnings about God's threatening to tear apart the wicked and His rejecting their hypocritical sacrifices and burnt offerings. Here we are told that God is coming with a devouring fire and a fierce storm. We are admonished that the Lord our God has no need for anyone to offer him a bull from his or her house or goats from his or her field, since every beast of the forest and every living creature is already His.

Psalm 50 explains the difference between sacrifices of the wicked and sacrifices of the worthy. After threatening destruction to the wicked and giving warning of no hope for deliverance, Psalm 50:23 points to the fresh wind of hope for the Christian, as we are told that God accepts the thanksgiving of the godly and promises salvation to the righteous.

Devotional Prayer: Father, let me be deemed worthy and let my praises to You be an acceptable offering to You.
