August 23 - First Things First

By Don Bailey

Today's Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:3–7

Central Thought: The resurrection of Christ is the key truth to Christian faith.

'Get to the point!” It is frustrating to try to listen to a story that constantly veers off into meaningless details. Sometimes the speaker can get so distracted in the details that he or she forgets what the story was about in the first place.

Sometimes Christians become so bogged down in various details of biblical interpretation or Christian practice that they start losing sight of what is important. At such times they may spend more time disputing with other Christians about some detail or another. When this happens, a believer's effectiveness as a witness for Christ is diminished.

Paul addressed true priorities in today's reading. He placed the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ up front as the most important truth for Christians to cherish. As Christians, we need to remind ourselves of our Lord's sacrifice for our sins. We cannot let life's pressures cause the Cross to disappear from our consideration. Without Jesus' great sacrifice, we would have no hope—we would be lost and in despair. Now, because of the Cross, we can get to the point and show the hope Christ gives to a lost and dying world.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, thank You so much for giving Your very best to forgive me of my sins.

Today's Bible Reading: Job 8:1–11:20; 1 Corinthians 15:1–28; Psalm 38:1–22; Proverbs 21:28–29
