Today's Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14:12
Central Thought: We should desire to build up one another in the Body of Christ.
Did you ever play dress-up as a child? Putting on their parents' clothing is a big treat for small children—but it is even more important to put on a 'fashion show” for mom and dad. Children crave their parents' attention and the chance to show off.
Sadly, some Christians want to continue to show off as adults—even when it comes to the operation of the gifts of the Spirit. These people may adopt mannerisms that will draw attention to their 'super spirituality.” They crave the attention and praise others might give them for being so greatly used in these gifts.
In today's reading some of Paul's readers were guilty of this very thing. Paul stressed that the sole purpose of God's gifts are to 'build up the church.” God does not call us to show off. He wants us to build others up. The gifts of the Spirit are designed to meet the needs God desires to meet. He knows best what each body of believers needs at a particular time. We should seek to let God use us in the gifts as He desires.
Devotional Prayer: Lord, show me opportunities to be a blessing and build up my fellow believers.
