July 18 - The Father of Many Nations

By Rev. Marcus Devasahayam Thomas

Today's Scripture: Romans 4:17

Central Thought: Abraham gives us an example of our faithful Heavenly Father.

'If only Dad were here. He'd know what to do.” Have you ever found yourself wanting to talk with Dad? Maybe Dad is only a phone call away, or maybe your Dad is no longer with you. If you had the privilege of having a Christian Dad, then you know the blessing of the godly counsel he gave.

Today's reading shows us the example of another godly father—Abraham. We all know Abraham and Sarah. They were old, and Sarah was well beyond the age that she could have a child. Though she was a barren, Abraham and Sarah believed God's promise that He would give them a child. True to His promise, the Lord gave life to the dead womb of Sarah in her old age and honored their faith.

As a result of this promise, the nation of Israel was born. From this nation God brought His Word to the world and sent His own Son as the fulfillment of the promise to David. As great a father Abraham was, your heavenly Father is far greater. He seeks your love and obedience today.

Devotional Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to appreciate the promises You have made to me.
