July 15 - Costless Offering

By Rev. Marcus Devasahayam Thomas

Today's Scripture: 1 Chronicles 21:24

Central Thought: We must offer gifts of value to God.

Mrs. Walker looked out the window to see her husband coming into the house with a beautiful bouquet of roses. She ran to the door and greeted her husband with great joy. As she looked more closely at the roses, she noticed that there were several different types in the bouquet. She asked her husband about this variety. 'Oh that is simple. I pulled the roses from 3 or 4 different yards on my way home.” Mr. Walker's gift suddenly lost a great deal of value.

In today's reading, we see that King David knew he could not offer sacrifices to God that cost him nothing. Therefore David paid the full price for Araunah's property so that he could offer sacrifices and stop the plague destroying Jerusalem. Later this property became the site of the Temple.

King David's example gives us some principles in giving offerings and sacrifices to God. Today, some people may think giving to God is a waste. Some may offer what is very cheap and of no value. Some people may give what they received freely. Unlike these examples, God wants us to give Him our very best.

Devotional Prayer: Thank You, God, for reminding me that You want my very best.
