Today's Scripture: Romans 1:16,17
Central Thought: God reveals His righteousness to us through the gospel.
The point guard dribbles, penetrates the lane, and then throws the ball back out to his red-hot teammate at the 3-point line—SWISH! After hitting his eighth 3-pointer of the game, teammates on the bench begin bowing as if to say, 'we're not worthy.” Even if their 'bows” were humorous, they were acknowledging they had witnessed a great basketball performance.
When it comes the gospel, we see the greatest example of our own unworthiness. We have nothing to offer God but our lives. We cannot boast of our goodness, superior intellect, or many talents. We can only depend on God's goodness and the power of His gospel to transform our lives. The Bible refers to this dependency as faith—the very thing God asks us to live by.
We need to pause and reflect on God's tremendous goodness to us in sending Jesus as the sacrifice for our sins. His sacrifice gives us everything we need to stand before God with His righteousness controlling our lives. We need to remember that God wants us to live by faith.
Devotional Prayer: Help me today to remember that I need to live by the faith You have given me.
