July 8 - Be Like Me?

By Don Bailey

Today's Scripture: Acts 26:29

Central Thought: God wants us to live the type of lives that others would want to copy.

Who is your role model? People often talk about the lack of quality role models in today's world. Athletes and celebrities often replace parents and leaders as role models. Unfortunately, these 'role models” may demonstrate selfishness and all manner of evil indulgences.

Those who knew the apostle Paul did not have to worry about following a bad role model. Paul demonstrated the reality of Christ's work in his life and did not hesitate for other people to follow his example. As Paul spoke to the Roman governor Festus, he stated that he wanted everyone to be like him—except for his being a prisoner. Paul did not make this statement based on his own goodness; rather, he emphasized Christ's goodness in his life.

Would we want people to follow our example of life? Such a thought may send terrifying shivers up our spines because we can think of our own weaknesses. Yet, we need to learn that our testimonies are not based on our goodness. We can emphasize God's goodness at work through us.

Devotional Prayer: Help me today to let my life point people to Your goodness.
