Today's Scripture: Proverbs 17:16
Central Thought: Wisdom cannot be purchased.
Your daily paper and television news reports are full of proof that wisdom cannot be purchased: actors, politicians, financial leaders, and all manner of well-to-do celebrities are constantly in the news for acting like fools or criminals.
Proverbs 17:16 instructs readers on the subject of how even the greatest billionaire can never purchase wisdom. The writer clearly points out that fools cannot purchase wisdom, no matter how much money they have. In your own more modest way, you may find yourself distracted from the path of wisdom by all the advertising around you, encouraging you to supposedly improve your life by buying more things.
Many wealthy people, as well as people with average incomes, have learned too late—and often with sorrow—that they can buy many things with their piles of gold or credit cards. They pay home decorators to create attractive homes, nannies to raise their children, hair stylists and dress designers to give them an aura of glamour, and so on. But no one can purchase wisdom, good judgment, or anything of lasting eternal value.
The source of wisdom is close at hand, easily available both to you and to foolish celebrities. Open your Bible for words that will guide you and give you the blueprint for receiving eternal life in heaven. The Bible contains advice that is freely given and that can lead people to become wise, if only they will read, pray, listen, and learn.
Devotional Prayer: Lord, help me to seek true wisdom from above—from You and Your Word. May I not be enticed by the 'wisdom” of this world, but may I surrender to the pure and righteous wisdom You offer.
