Today's Scripture: 1 Kings 15:25-17:24
Central Thought: The widow at Zarepath faced starvation, yet prepared food for the prophet Elijah when he assured her that God would provide.
On a recent vacation my husband and I drove down a lonely desert highway in Utah, heading from Green River to the western Utah border, when we were alarmed to see our truck's gas gauge pointing perilously close to empty. While we did what we could on this hot September day to conserve gasoline, including rolling up the windows to cut air drag and maintaining a steady speed of 55 miles per hour, I put my prayer power into full gear, asking God to help our truck make it to the next gas station. I prayed our way all the way to the next remote station, where we were thrilled to buy a full tank of gas, no matter the price per gallon.
We trusted God to get us safely to the gas station, but the widow at Zarepath had a mightier faith. With her family facing starvation when the prophet Elijah arrived at her house, Elijah told her to prepare him a meal, and he promised her that her jugs of flour and of oil would not be empty throughout the devastating drought that was taking place.
The widow dared to do as Elijah requested, preparing a meal for him with her last spoonful of flour and drops of oil; in answer to her needs, plenty of food was provided for her family every day until the rains returned to the land where she lived.
Devotional Prayer: God, help me to be as comfortable in my trust in You to provide for me as the widow at Zarepath.
