Today's Scripture: Psalm 126:5
Central Thought: All the sorrowful things in my life can be made into something wonderful if I allow God into my problems.
The ringing phone shattered the peace of the day. We lived in Germany, and our son attended college in America. The caller was in the U.S.A., and we learned our son had overdosed on drugs and was in serious shape.
Gaping at the phone, I stammered: 'What?” Maybe it's a wrong number! It wasn't. The conversation continued about a drug treatment center he could attend, but it would cost over $5,000. I was speechless. 'I have to discuss this with my husband,” I explained, and said I'd call back as soon as I could.
My husband Frank and I prayed. I cried, and we held each other. The most important step we took on that devastating day was to commit it all to the Lord.
A long and unpleasant time stretched out before us. We often wondered if God really heard our prayers. It seemed hopeless so many times, and it severely tried our faith. Yet, God did hear and answer. Today our son is clean and sober (and has been for a long time). He is healthy and uses his experiences to help others.
Sometimes when we laugh together, I think of those dark days and know that God truly does give joy for sadness.
Devotional Prayer: Lord God, only You can make good out of bad. Help me remember to bring everything to You. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
