June 6 - Honest Praise

By Crystal J. Ortmann

Today's Scripture: Proverbs 16:24

Central Thought: A dose of honest praise daily can brighten someone's world.

I walked down the tunnel at the airport heading for the parking garage. The only other person I saw was the custodian. He was busily vacuuming and cleaning, and the area showed it. The tunnel was spotless. 'Thanks for doing such a wonderful job,” I praised him. 'It makes such a difference to have things look so nice.”

His face glowed, and he thanked me for my kind words. It made me think about the many people I take for granted every day. I decided I would make an effort to watch for those who help make my life better. So often they are like the woodwork, and I pass them by without a thought. Where would this world be without those who keep it clean? Yet, they are often the most under-appreciated people.

Each person needs to know he or she is important and that the job is appreciated. It may be done with a friendly smile, a wave, or it may be an honest compliment on a job well done. Whatever the method, it can bring joy and comfort to a lonely, hurting soul. It costs nothing and blesses everyone, including the giver.

Devotional Prayer: Blessed Lord, help me look for opportunities to brighten people's lives with a good word. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
