Today's Scripture: Proverbs 16:18
Central Thought: He's faithful to help us when we become full of ourselves.
My heart swelled with pride. I was a published writer! Doorways were almost too small for me to walk through with my bloated head. I loved the attention and admiration from others. My first autograph signing had me reeling, but my joy was hollow. I easily rationalized my ego trip, but deep inside, I knew something wasn't right. However, since I enjoyed the adulation, I pushed the unease aside.
A visiting speaker to my writers' group brought it all into focus. She was renowned throughout the Christian world. Her accomplishments included teaching, writing books, and setting up classes on writing in other parts of the world. She certainly had the credentials to receive laud and honor. Yet when she stepped to the podium, her talk centered not her accomplishments, but on giving the glory to Jesus Christ.
What was missing in my life and my so-called success was suddenly clear—I had the wrong priorities. God wanted to use my gifts to bless others, but I saw only the praise I was getting. In shame I asked forgiveness, thankful God was faithful to show me my sin before I fell completely on my face.
Devotional Prayer: Father God, You are so faithful to keep us humble. Help me to bless others and give You the praise. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
