April 5 - Blessing Requires Obedience

By Willard Teague

Devotional Scripture: Deuteronomy 28:1

Central Thought: Let's reach the nations for Him!

In today's Bible reading the Lord promised blessings in response to obedience of His Word and cursing for disobedience. He promised that the Children of Israel would be elevated above all the nations of the earth if they obeyed Him. Blessings would overtake them in the city and in the field. However, if they disobeyed Him many curses would come upon them, and they would finally be scattered among the nations of the earth in captivity. When we consider the plight of Israel in history, we are reminded that God keeps His Word. Israel did not remain faithful according to the terms of the covenant.

Deuteronomy 28:10 reminds us of the covenant with Abraham and echoes a universal missionary thrust. Obedience would not only guarantee God's blessing but would also be responsible for spreading the knowledge of God's name among the nations of the earth. This was indeed the reason for the existence of Israel. The real purpose for God's blessing on Israel was so that He could bless all the people on earth.

This should be a sign and a warning for us today. One of the chief commands of the Lord to His disciples had to do with making disciples of all nations. In this task He promised that He would always be with those obeying such a command (Matthew 28:18-20). Great blessing comes to any individual or church that is engaged in obeying and carrying out this command.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help us through Your Spirit to be obedient to Your command to reach the nations for You.
