April 1 - Words of Eternal Life

By Willard Teague

Devotional Scripture: Deuteronomy 18:14-15

Central Thought: Jesus has the words of eternal life!

There is a great increase in the use of sorcery and the occult. The world seeks to know the future and have spiritual knowledge through the evil or dark side. This is particularly true of the New Age. There is no interest in communion with a Holy God who has a standard of holy living. They do not want to conform to such a life. Nevertheless, it is a universal human desire to know the unknown and to avoid harm. God warned Israel against the practice of the occult and spiritism because they lead to death.

God told Israel through their leader Moses that they were not to be like these people. God would raise up a prophet like Moses from among them. Moses was a deliverer. This new prophet would be a deliverer as well. Moses heard from God, and the new prophet would be one who would speak the words of the true, living God. This would not be what humans could discover, but what God would reveal. Moses was faithful in intercession and had compassion for his people.

God was faithful to His Word and raised up that prophet from among the Jewish people. We must listen to Him because He has the words of eternal life. It was in this way that God commanded Moses in the wilderness to lift up a brazen serpent as a cure for the serpent bites. Forgiveness of sin and the cure for the curse is through Christ as He is lifted up. He is the prophet like Moses. The other ways lead to death; the way to Christ leads to life!

A lady in West Africa went to a witch doctor to seek a solution for the problems she was encountering in her home. When she left the witch doctor's house, she was deaf and dumb. She remained in this condition for two years until a missionary came to her city to preach Christ. One evening during the evangelistic service, the presence of the Holy Spirit opened her ears, and she was delivered from Satan and found a new life in Christ as she confessed to Him and accepted Him as her personal Savior.

How can we apply this truth? Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. To be in conformity to the world will bring death, but placing our hope and life in Christ brings healing and eternal life.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help us to recognize You as the source of all life and strength.
