Devotional Scripture: Psalm 66:9
Central Thought: God will preserve His children and keep them from falling.
The authorship of Psalm 66 is not certain. Some ascribe it to David, others to Hezekiah and various writers. While we may never know who wrote this Psalm, it stands firm as a song of victory, a song of God's deliverance and sustenance. We see the preserving grace of God in verse 9: 'He has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping” (NIV). The Israelites were on the verge of destruction, but God delivered them.
We can easily connect the concept of deliverance and preservation with the new life in Christ. It is one thing to receive the new life, but it doesn't stop there. God preserves it and sustains it everyday. Not only does He preserve our physical lives from all the dangers of the world, but He also keeps our spiritual lives intact (1 Peter 1:3-5). God not only calls us, but He also keeps us all the days of our lives (Jude 1:1-2).
Do we recognize the importance of God's delivering and sustaining power in our lives? Too often we take His sustaining grace for granted. One December night, in certain regions of the Indian Ocean, hundreds of thousands of people went to bed…never dreaming it would be their last night on earth. These were the victims of the massive tsunami that struck on December 26, 2004. We have a lot to be thankful for. May we always be thankful for the delivering power and sustaining grace of God.
Devotional Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to recognize your delivering and preserving power in my life. Help me to be thankful for how You care for me.
