March 7 - Houses of Brick

By: Larry Thomas

Central Thought: God's way is the refuge we all seek.

Today's Scripture: Proverbs 10:29-30

Let's take a step back in time. Remember the story of the three little pigs? Who doesn't recall cheering for those little guys in the face of sure disaster? Looking back now from my present stage in life, I can see it was more than a fairy tale. It was a story with some very good principles for life.

You recall as the pigs went out on their own, each of the little guys confidently built their new homes. One fashioned his houses out of straw, one out of sticks, and the other out of bricks. Each worked for a time, but when the old wolf showed up, the hay and stick structures collapsed around them. Only when they joined their brother in his house of bricks were they safe from the attacks of the wolf.

The writer of Proverbs tells us something very similar in today's reading. He warns a self-sufficient society that there is only one secure and safe place to be. That refuge is found in the Lord as we live according to His ways. Anyone who tries to do it his or her own way soon finds that houses of 'straw” and 'sticks” cannot withstand the 'huffs and puffs” of the enemy. Only the refuge the Lord provides will stand in trying times.

Devotional Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for providing a safe and lasting refuge for me.
