Devotional Scripture: Genesis 37:1-9
Central Thought: Dreams often have consequences in life.
Jealousy has driven people to commit great sin against God and mankind. Joseph was trustworthy to tell his father about the conduct of his brothers and honest to share what God had placed within his heart in a vision. But he was also proud to show off a gift from his father, and perhaps indiscrete in knowing how and when to speak. We have all received special gifts we could not wait to show off to family and friends. Have you ever had knowledge about something you could not wait to share with someone?
Some believe there are two types of jealousy. First, people can be jealous because they want something that belongs to another. Second, people can be jealous that another person has something, whether they want it or not! Sound familiar? It seems that Joseph met his share of jealous people during his life's journey. Unfortunately, some were the ones with whom he shared his dreams.
Dreams can have great consequences. The consequences of Joseph's sharing his dreams set into motion events that shaped the future of all of their lives. How many times while he was in slavery or prison could he have doubted these visions? His circumstances did not appear to be in his favor, but God was working out a plan!
The lesson is not in the details but in the events. When God reveals a dream to someone, it will come to pass, but it may launch a series of events that can confound even the wisest believer. Don't lose hope when your journey looks hopeless. When God promises something, He will finish the work in His time.
Are you a dreamer? It is a gift to dream big dreams, and it honors God. Be careful to add faith, hope, and discretion—and one day a dream will become a reality.
Devotional Prayer: Father, help me to dream Your dreams for my life and trust You to make them a reality.
