January 16 - Intelligent Design

Devotional Scripture: Proverbs 3:19-20

Central Thought: God's touch on our lives will always have purpose and design.

Proverbs 3:19-20 mentions several aspects of creation, using words associated with intelligence—wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. While Genesis 1 presents images of the Intelligent Designer and His creation, Proverbs 3:19-20 presents the image of intelligent design. God did speak and create (Genesis 1), but His creation was based on more than just His power. All of His creation had an intelligent design.

The longer I live, the more majestic God becomes to me. When I see His intelligent design, the more I find myself becoming thoroughly convinced there is nothing on earth and in my life that He cannot do or accomplish. Perhaps this is the place the writer of Proverbs had come to. He described God in today's scripture reading as the God who created the earth from the foundation up by His wisdom. He was the One who put every celestial body in this vast cosmos in place by His understanding. He was the one who designed the topography of the ocean floor by His knowledge. In essence, God designed and laid out the places no man has ever gone or even seen. How can I be sure? Well, the author pointed to something else we see every day. This same God set the weather patterns in place as well.

The Intelligent Designer never creates anything or anyone without purpose and design. When we have a need, we can be certain that He is powerful enough to meet our need. But we can also be certain that when He touches us, His touch will have purpose and design. He never does anything without a reason or without a plan.

When I ponder these thoughts for a moment, I reach one conclusion: God has a purpose for everything He does or allows to happen in my life. And with that purpose comes a design to make me more like Him.

Devotional Prayer: Father, help me to trust Your purpose and Your design for my life.
