January 10 - Lessons for the Heart

Devotional Scripture: Proverbs 3:5

Central Thought: Some lessons are learned only in the heart.

After I graduated from college, an interesting transformation took place: I began to enjoy studying and learning. (Perhaps my college years would have gone a little smoother had I developed this interest earlier in life!) Knowledge is important. Studying is essential. However, God designed some lessons to be learned in the heart. Proverbs 3:5 serves as a reminder of this truth. After all, it says to trust God 'with all your heart,” not with all your mind or brain.

As a Sunday school teacher, I try to prepare lessons that touch both hearts and minds. In order to accomplish this, I guard against making lessons that are totally cognitive experiences. Each lesson concludes with a heart-to-heart component involving discussion and application. It is during these moments that my ability to trust God grows. And as I listen to others tell how God has guided their lives, especially through difficult times when understanding was lacking or even absent, I begin to realize that I am learning valuable lessons…in my heart.

Keep studying, keep learning. Knowledge is one of the blessings in life. However, always remember that some lessons are learned only in the heart. And those are the lessons that bless not only you but also others.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help me to trust You with all my heart, because it is one of the most important lessons You desire me to learn.
