Today's Scripture: Revelation 3:7-22
Central Thought: What the church lacks to effectively do the job, God provides in abundance.
What a refreshing change from the other churches addressed in this book. The church at Philadelphia received several wonderful compliments from the Lord of the Church. This is even more remarkable when we see how they were surrounded by five temples that housed all sorts of vile practices and cultic rituals.
Unlike the previous church that had tolerated sin to a fault, the church in Philadelphia took a costly stand. Even though they possessed 'little power,” they made a bold stand and remained true to their calling. A careful reading of the remainder of the account reveals that God's obvious favor was upon them. Not only His favor, but God honored their efforts. Even with a tough fight on their hands, God promised to vindicate and make them victorious before their adversaries.
What a message to all of us who make up the Church today. The church of today is inundated with so many things that are designed to distract, disrupt, and destroy. However, the message is still the same, 'Hold fast what you have…” (vs. 11). It worked then, and it will work today.
Devotional Prayer: Dear Jesus, help us hold true to Your plan even when others around us waiver.
