Earl D. Radmacher, in his book You & Your Thoughts, The Power Of Right Thinkingstated, "The human mind is a fabulous computer. As a matter of fact, no one has been able to design a computer as intricate and efficient as the human mind. Consider this: your brain is capable of recording 800 memories per second for seventy-five years without ever getting tired." Furthermore, Richard A. Swenson, M.D., revealed, "The capacity of the brain is such that it can hold information equivalent to that contained in twenty-five million books, enough to fill a bookshelf five hundred miles long."
In Romans 12:2, Paul exhorted us to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind." "Transformed" means "changed." The biological expression "metamorphosis" comes from it. "Renewing" means "a renovation, complete change for the better." This process is to be continuous, day by day. The NEB translates this, "But let your minds be remade, and your whole nature thus transformed."
In John 15:3, Jesus stated, "Now you are clean because of the word which I have spoken to you." The word for clean here comes from the Greek word katharismos from which we get our English word catharsis. Christ employs His Word to give us a mental "catharsis." To be frank, it's similar to what is done to the bowels when a patient is given an enema. The Scriptures act as an enema for the mind. The Psalmist spoke of this cathartic effect of the Word of God when he wrote, "How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word," Psalm 119:9.
GIGO is a computer term, an acronym for Garbage In, Garbage Out. Computer programmers know that whatever they feed into a computer will inevitably show up in the printout. Years ago, the "Home Life Magazine" published the following illustration: One day, as a mother was scraping and peeling vegetables for a salad, her daughter came to ask permission to go to a worldly center of amusement. On the defensive, the daughter admitted it was a questionable place, but all the other girls were going, and they did not think it would actually hurt them. As the girl talked, suddenly she saw her mother pick up a handful of discarded vegetable scraps, and throw them into the salad. In a startled voice, she cried, "Mother, you are putting the garbage into the salad." "Yes," her mother replied. "I know, but I thought that if you did not mind garbage in your mind and heart, you certainly would not mind a little in your stomach!"
Proverbs 4:23, "Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life" (NCV).
