Disturbing Trends Against Women

A study by the Los Angeles based "Parents Television Council" shows that storylines on primetime television are graphically depicting violence against women as never before. The report, "Women in Peril" revealed that incidences of violence against women on ABC,CBS, FOX and NBC shows rose 120% between 2004 and 2009! Overall, violence on the same networks during the span increased only 2%!

This study reported that females were depicted as victims of violence 429 times in 2009 compared to 195 times 5 years earlier. The most frequent type of violence was being beaten 29%; next was a credible threat of violence...18%; shootings 11%; rape 8%; stabbings 6% and torture 2%. During 19% of these depictions, the woman died.

CBS had the highest number of instances with 118 but NBC had the highest increase of violence during this period, 192%. THIS REPORT ALSO NOTED A 400% RISE IN VIOLENT PORTRAYALS AGAINST TEENAGE GIRLS!

"In depicting violence against women and teenage girls with increasing frequency on television, or as a trivial, even humorous matter, the networks may be contributing to an atmosphere in which YOUNG PEOPLE view aggression and violence against women as normative, even acceptable," this study concluded.

This is a challenge for the next generation to deal with. When you become the next television programming personnel...what will you do to change this trend? Our pattern is Jesus Christ, who when he walked this earth elevated women to the same level of men! We all become equal when we gather at the foot of the cross!

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28).
