What About Taking Revenge?
WHAT ABOUT TAKING REVENGE?
There is much speculation about the origin of the "mafia." It's a fascinating story. Most historians agree that on a Monday, sometime in the year of 1242, a French soldier viciously attacked a young Palermo Italian maid at her wedding. As the word spread about the attack a band of Sicilians retaliated by destroying this French troop.
The "mafia" is speculated to have begun at this point by taking revenge. They adopted the name from the anguished cry of the girl's mother, who ran through the streets of Palermo shouting, "Ma-fia, Ma...fia" which is translated to read, "My daughter ...My daughter...My daughter!"
What started as an attempt to right a wrong has evolved into a loathsome parasite on society. The French retaliated...the Sicilians sought more revenge and on and on it went. How do you settle a wrong? This scourge has plagued society with their actions of dealing in extortion, murder, kidnapping, drugs, pornography, prostitution, gambling and more.
Taking revenge...getting even starts the circle of revenge which keeps on enlarging until all involved people are destroyed.
There is absolutely no passion which is released into the human heart that promises so much satisfaction and pays off in so little as the action of taking revenge. Taking revenge is volatile! When have you taken "enough" revenge? Can a put-down be fixed by doing two put-downs to the perpetrator? Revenge is such a raging passion that God says He is the only one who settles the wrongs in this world. Revenge is an action for fools! Don't get caught in the downward spiral of human actions!
For we know Him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge His people." It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Hebrews 10:30-31).
