Are Emotions Enough?
ARE EMOTIONS ENOUGH?
The concept, "If it feels good, just do it" seems to be everywhere in our 21st century world. Teens are being told to allow their impulses to be the main thing in making life choices. This concept brings to mind a story told by Dr. James Dobson of "Focus on the Family" fame about his mother's high school football team...
This high school football had one of the worst teams in the history of Oklahoma. They hadn't won a game in years. It became almost a scandal to the town. FINALLY, a wealthy oil producer in the town asked to speak to team in the locker room following another dismal defeat. He offered to buy for every player and coach a brand new Ford of their choice...IF they would simply defeat their bitter rivals in the next Friday game!
The team and coaches went crazy! For seven days they thought about nothing but football and new Fords! They were so excited they couldn't sleep at nights. Talk about motivation! Just one win and receive a new Ford! It couldn't get any better.
FINALLY...the big night arrived and the team was frantic with anticipation! They assembled around their coaches on the sideline! They slapped high fives! They shouted Rah...RAH...RAH...RAH! Then they ran on the field...and were smashed once more... 38 to 0! Thirty-eight to nothing! (SOURCE: Dr. Dobson's "Family Bulletin")
No amount of excitement could compensate for the players' lack of discipline, conditioning, practice, study, coaching, running drills, experience and character! Such is the nature of emotion. It has a definite place in your life...BUT, IT IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR INTELLIGENCE, CHARACTER, PREPARATION AND SELF CONTROL!
"Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing can compare with her!" (Proverbs 8:10-11)
