Study # 8. Baptism Into the Holy Spirit.
Matt. 3:11 The Baptizer here is Jesus, the Second Person of the Godhead, who baptizes us into the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Godhead. This is not Salvation.
Acts 1:8 ‘Receive power’…’be witnesses’. The purpose of the Baptism into the Holy
Spirit, is clearly stated by the Baptizer, Jesus Christ, to make us powerful in witness. (Compare John 20:19 and Acts 4:31).
John 14:17 ‘Whom the World cannot receive…..will be in you’.
The Sinner receives Christ and becomes a Believer at Salvation
Now the Believer has the Holy Spirit with them, but Jesus says He, the Spirit will be in them.
Eph. 1:13 The Holy Spirit came in after they Believed. Acts 19:5-6 they were Baptized in water and then they were filled with the Holy Spirit.
Compare the order of the First and Fourth Baptisms. (See Study 4.)
Into Christ. 1 Cor 12:13. Holy Spirit Baptizes us into Christ.
Into the Holy Spirit. Matt. 3:11. Christ Jesus Baptizes us into Holy Spirit.
These two are not the same, or for the same purpose!
How to be Filled.
Luke 11:13 We have to ask Jesus to fill us with the Holy Spirit. The preceding verses are an answer to the disciples asking to be taught to pray.
Jesus culminates this teaching by telling them to ask for the Holy Spirit. The Spirit helps us to Pray. (Romans 8:26)
Luke 24:49 Wait on God for this Promise of the Holy Spirit, to be endued with Power.
Acts 1:4-5 Quotes the promise and infers that the Believers were not yet filled with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 19:2 ‘Received’ = ‘to take’, is an ACTIVE word, always used of the Holy Spirit after the day of Pentecost.
The Sign of Tongues.
Acts 2:4 ‘They were filled …and began to speak with tongues’.
Compare Acts 10:45 – 46. Recognition of the Baptism was based on them
hearing these people speak in tongues.
Acts 8:17-18 In Samaria Simon saw these receive the Holy Spirit. Other manifestations had not interested Simon, this did.
Act 9:17 Ananias laid hands on Paul to receive the Holy Spirit. Paul’s testimony is found in 1 Cor. 14:18.”I speak with tongues…”
The Gift of Tongues.
1 Cor. 12:7-11. Nine gifts are listed as gifts of the Holy Spirit.
These are for ministry in and through the Church, including the Gift of Tongues.
Chapter 14 teaches us how to operate these gifts.
The Gift of Tongues is not the Sign of Tongues.
