Christians use the word "devotions" to describe daily, meaningful interaction between a believer and God. Church services are important parts of your journey with Jesus. Learning from a teacher of the Word and spending time with other Christians is important. However, God desires to have a personal relationship with his children. Contact "every so often" is not enough.
There are few things more enjoyable than spending time with good friends. Taking time for the people in our lives is how we make our relationships grow stronger. Your relationship with God is no different. He created us so that He could be near us and spend time with us.
Devotions could mean reading a few verses of the Bible when you wake up in the morning. Or you could find a few minutes in your day to sit alone and pray, to talk to God. A quick internet search will bring up devotional programs designed to guide you through daily time with God. Whatever you choose, remember: You don't have to have an entire church service by yourself. There is no pressure with God. He doesn't care about fancy shows. He just wants to be with you. The most important thing is to spend time every day focused on God, as if He were any other friend you need to give your attention to in order to get to know better and grow closer to.
Jesus explains the importance of the Word of the Lord by saying It is written: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:3 ESV). Simply being a follower of Christ is not enough to live a complete life. You must be constantly growing in your understanding and in your connection to God. Even if it's only a few words when you have the time, it will make a difference. Can you survive on a church service a week? Maybe. But you won't be living the best possible life, which is why Jesus came to Earth and died in the first place. As He said, I came that they may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10, ESV). Daily connection with God is important to stay healthy and live well.
