1 Kings Part 2 Bible Study

Chapter 16 tells the story of five wicked kings: Baasha, Elah, Zimri, Omri and Ahab. King Ahab was the king of Israel for twenty-two years and 'did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him” (v. 30). For God to say that, Ahab must have been very evil! Ahab married Jezebel, an idol-worshiping woman, and began to worship a god named Baal. 'He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria” (v. 32).

God sent the prophet Elijah to tell Ahab that there would be neither dew nor rain for the next few years (17:1). During this drought God sent ravens to feed Elijah (v. 6).

'Meanwhile Jezebel was killing off the Lord's prophets” (18:4). She knew Elijah was a prophet of God and wanted to get rid of him. Ahab went to meet Elijah and called him the 'troubler of Israel” (v. 17).

Elijah put forth a challenge to Ahab to assemble the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who ate at Jezebel's table. So all the prophets assembled on Mount Carmel for the big showdown between Ahab and Jezebel's god, Baal, and Elijah's God, the God of heaven and earth. The prophets of Baal showed themselves to be powerless; their god did not respond to their pleas (18:29). But God performed a powerful miracle, proving that He alone is the one true God. 'When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, 'The LORD—he is God!'” (v. 39). All the prophets of Baal were put to the sword.

After Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done to the prophets of Baal, she sent word to Elijah that she was going to do the same to him (19:1-2). Elijah was afraid and fled into the desert. He sat under a tree and asked the Lord to just let him die!

An angel appeared to Elijah and gave him bread and water. Then Elijah traveled forty days and forty nights to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night. God told him to go to the Desert of Damascus and anoint Hazael king over Aram and Jehu king over Israel. He also instructed Elijah to anoint Elisha to succeed him as prophet (19:15-16).

God doesn't want us to fear the actions of our enemies, but to face our troubles with Him and ask Him to guide us.

Ahab did more to provoke the Lord to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him. 'There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife” (21:25). Be sure and read the last chapter of 1 Kings about Ahab's death.
