Genesis 33-36 Bible Study

The beginning of chapter 33 tells us that Jacob looked up and there before him was his brother Esau, coming with his four hundred men. So Jacob divided up his family into three groups. He put the maidservants and their children in front, then Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear. Notice that Jacob put his favorite wife and child in the back. Then Jacob went ahead of his family and met Esau.

When Jacob saw Esau he bowed down. But Esau ran to Jacob and put his arms around him and kissed him. He was glad to see his brother and they both wept. Then Esau met Jacob's maidservants and their children and both of his wives and their children. After their meeting Jacob and Esau split up. Esau went back to his home in Seir, and Jacob and his family went to the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan.

Some time later the Lord appeared to Jacob and told him to take all of his family and settle in Bethel (35:1). Jacob told his household to purify themselves by getting rid of their gods and changing their clothes.

The Lord appeared to Jacob again and blessed him, telling him again that his name would no longer be Jacob, but Israel (35:9-12). He also told him to be fruitful and multiply and nations would come from him.

Jacob and his family then traveled from Bethel. Rachel was giving birth to a baby boy but was having great difficulty doing so. As she was dying she named her son Ben-Oni ('son of my trouble”), but Jacob named the boy Benjamin ('son of my right hand”).

Verses 23-26 list the twelve sons of Jacob. They became the twelve tribes of Israel.
