Genesis 29-30 Bible Study

Chapter 29 picks up where chapter 28 left off. Jacob had just about completed his journey and had stopped at a well when he saw Rachel, a daughter of Laban, coming to the well with her father's sheep. When she arrived, Jacob rolled the stone away from the well so Rachel could water her sheep. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and told her who he was. She went and told her father, Laban.

Laban welcomed Jacob to his house. After Jacob had been there for a month, he went to work for Laban. Jacob told Laban that he would work for him for seven years in return for the hand of Laban's daughter Rachel in marriage. They agreed and Jacob worked for seven years, which seemed like just a few days to him because of Jacob's love for Rachel (29:20).

To celebrate the marriage of his daughter, Laban had a big feast. But when the evening came, Laban gave Jacob his daughter Leah instead of Rachel. He also gave Leah her own maidservant Zilpah. When Jacob objected, Laban told him that it was their custom that the oldest daughter should marry first. Laban told Jacob that if he would complete Leah's 'bridal week,” then Laban would give his daughter Rachel to Jacob in return for another seven years of work. So Jacob agreed and finished the week with Leah. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. Laban also gave the maidservant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel. Jacob then worked another seven years for Laban.

Beginning in verse 31 and continuing into chapter 30, verse 24, we read about the children of Jacob. Leah gave birth to four sons. Rachel, however, had no children and became jealous of her sister. So, Rachel gave Jacob her servant Bilhah, who gave birth to a son named Dan. Then Bilhah conceived again and gave Jacob a son named Naphtali.

When Leah saw that she had stopped giving Jacob any more children, she gave him her servant Zilpah, who gave birth to a son named Gad. Zilpah bore a second son named Asher. Then Leah slept with Jacob and bore a son named Issachar. She again became pregnant and gave Jacob a son named Zebulun. Some time later Leah became pregnant and gave Jacob a daughter named Dinah.

After all this, God blessed Rachel and she gave Jacob a son named Joseph.

God blessed Jacob and his flocks increased greatly. However, Jacob was ready to go on his own way and work for himself instead of for Laban.
