Gensis 27-28 Bible Study

In chapters 27 and 28 we read the story of a blessing and the deceit in receiving that blessing. As chapter 27 opens, it has been many years since Esau gave away his birthright to his brother, Jacob. In Biblical days the dad would give the birthright to the oldest brother, and that brother would become the head of the household upon the father's death. As we know, Esau was the older of the two boys. Isaac summoned his son Esau and told him to go hunt and catch some game and prepare some stew for him to eat. Isaac told Esau that after he ate the stew he would give Esau his blessing.

Rebekah overheard the conversation and told Jacob to get two goats from their flocks and she would prepare some stew the way Isaac liked it. Then she would give Jacob the stew to take to his father, and Jacob would receive the blessing. Rebekah put Esau's clothes on Jacob and placed goat's skin on his arms so he would appear to be hairy like his brother, Esau. So Jacob did as his mother told him and in verses 27-29 Isaac blessed Jacob.

After Jacob had left Isaac's tent, Esau arrived with the food he had prepared for his father. When Isaac found out that he had been tricked by Jacob, he 'trembled violently” (v. 33). He knew that Jacob had the birthright. Esau asked his father to bless him also. Verses 39-40 tell us Isaac's reply to his son Esau.

Needless to say, Esau held a grudge against his brother and planned to kill him someday. When Rebekah heard that Esau planned to kill Jacob, she sent for Jacob and told him to go live with her brother Laban.

Chapter 28 opens with Isaac blessing Jacob and telling him not to marry a Canaanite woman, but to go take a wife from the daughters of Laban. When Esau learned what his father had told Jacob he went and married a relative of Ishmael, just as his father did not want!

Beginning in verse 10 we read the story of Jacob's dream while he was traveling to his uncle Laban's house in Haran. In his dream, Jacob sees a stairway (some versions call it a ladder) from the earth going up to heaven. Angels were ascending and descending on the stairway. At the top of the stairway stood the Lord. He told Jacob that he would have many descendants and all peoples of the earth would be blessed through him. The Lord also told him that He would always be with him.

When Jacob awoke he said, ''How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven'” (v. 17). Jacob poured oil on the rock and named the place Bethel. He vowed to give God a tenth of everything that God would give him (v. 20).
