Genesis 22 Bible Study

God tested Abraham in a way that He had not tested anyone in the Bible before. He told Abraham, ''Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about'” (v. 2).

Abraham and Sarah had waited so many years to have a child. Imagine how heart wrenching that must have been for Abraham to think of sacrificing that son to God.

Abraham shows us the real meaning of faith and trust. The next morning he took Isaac and two of his servants and set out for the place God had told him about. After traveling for three days, Abraham saw the place in the distance, and he told his servants, ''Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you'” (v. 5).

Abraham did exactly as God had commanded. He gave Isaac the wood to carry and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As Abraham and Isaac went on together, Isaac asked his father, ''The fire and wood are here . . . but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?'” (v. 7).

'Abraham answered, 'God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son'” (v. 8).

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar and placed the wood on it. He bound his son and laid him on the altar. I imagine Isaac's faith also had to be great when he realized that he would be sacrificed. Just as Abraham took the knife to sacrifice Isaac, the angel of the Lord spoke to Abraham and told him, ''Do not lay a hand on the boy. . . . Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son'” (v. 12).

God tested Abraham to see if Abraham would obey Him. How many people today would trust God that much and respond the way Abraham did?

God provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice as a burnt offering. 'Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide.” God told Abraham that since he had not withheld his son, He would bless Abraham and make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. God also told him, ''Through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me'” (v. 18).

God blesses us when we obey Him. We are accountable to God and to those in positions of authority over us. God puts parents in authority over children, and children should respect and obey their parents, for they are accountable to them. Parents are also accountable to God for how they raise their children.
