Genesis 11: Introduction

Chapter 11 tells the story of the Tower of Babel, which took place many years after Noah and his family left the ark. By this time God had greatly increased the number of people on the earth. However, even though there were a lot of people they all spoke the same language. Everyone could understand everyone else.

The word "Babel" is made up of two separate Hebrew words. The first word is bab, which means "gate," and the second word is el, meaning "god," or the "gate of god." Babel also sounds like the Hebrew word for "confusion." The Tower of Babel was probably in Iraq.

As the people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar (Babylon) and settled there. They decided to build a city, with a tower that reached to the heavens (v. 4). Notice why the people wanted to build the tower: "‘So that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.'"

But as you can see in verses 5-7 God was not pleased with what man had done. He knew that man's ability to communicate was very important. Since all the people spoke the same language they would unite and there wasn't much they couldn't do. So God went down and confused their language so they could not understand each other. After God confused their language, the people scattered over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.

Beginning in verse 10 to the end of chapter 11 God gives us a "family tree" of Noah's son Shem. You may wonder why this is so important. The family tree contains the name Abram (Abraham) in verse 27. Abram was a man who followed God, and God used him to influence history even until today. We will learn more about this very important man later.

Fill in the blanks on the worksheet and on the "Go to the Word" sheet. Reading our Bible makes things much clearer in our minds and in our hearts. God bless you as you study His Word.
